The US dollar/Japanese yen fell sharply to around 140.50 during the North American trading session on Monday. The pair rips after falling below last week's low of 141.64, with the goal of retesting the 21-month low of 139.60. The asset showed significant weakness as the US dollar (USD) fell sharply.
The dollar index (DXY), which tracks the value of the dollar against six major currencies, plummeted to nearly 98.00, its lowest level in three years.
Investors sell the dollar as U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to fire Fed Chairman Jerome Powell on the grounds that he did not lower interest rates. Last week, Powell said the economy allowed us to stay in the status quo until we have a clearer understanding of the economic outlook.
Trump said: "The Fed really owes the American people a chance to cut interest rates. This is the only thing he can do well. I'm not satisfied with him. If I want him to leave there, he will leave soon, believe me."
This scenario is seen as a blow to Washington's confidence in the operation of the Fed, which is an independent institution, which has led to investors' suspicion of the safe-haven position of the dollar.
Meanwhile, the Japanese yen (JPY) outperforms other currencies because of increased global economic uncertainty due to the lack of clarity of Trump's tariff policy, and the demand for safe-havenity in the yen has increased, even though Trump has announced a 90-day moratorium on the implementation of reciprocal tariffs.
Financial market participants expect Trump's international policy to force global central banks to turn to a "loose" stance.However, the Reuters report noted that the Bank of Japan (BoJ) is expected to continue supporting the rate hike. The agency reported that risks from higher U.S. tariffs do not disrupt the cycle of rising wages and inflation, which is seen as key to continuing interest rate hikes.
