Euro/JPY cross-currency pair attracts buyers for the second consecutive day and climbs back to above 162.00 during the Asian session on Thursday. The momentum of the intraday rise xmtraders.comes from weak market sentiment in the Japanese yen (JPY), although traders may choose to wait for the European Central Bank (ECB) interest rate decisions, thus limiting their rise.
The market generally expects the ECB to cut its key interest rate by 25 basis points (bps), the sixth consecutive rate cut amid slowdowns and increased trade risks. In fact, the final data released on Wednesday showed that the euro zone's overall inflation rate in March fell to 2.2% year-on-year, down from 2.6% last month. In addition, the core inflation rate excluding volatile xmtraders.components such as energy and food fell to 2.4%, the lowest level since January 2022.
At the same time, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 20% reciprocal tariff on EU imports, but was suspended for 90 days in the process of seeking a bilateral trade agreement. However, a 10% full import tariff remains in effect, affecting about 380 billion euros of European goods. This has exacerbated economic uncertainty and could force the ECB to take a more dovish stance and show more attention to economic growth. Therefore, the market will also focus on the ECB's updated economic forecasts and press conferences.
Investors will closely follow the speech of ECB President Christina Lagarde to get clues to future interest rate paths, which will have a significant impact on the euro and provide new impetus for the euro/yen cross-currency pair. As the risk of a key central bank incident approaches, positive risk sentiment is believed to weaken the safe-haven yen and supports spot prices. However, mildThe dollar (USD) rebound puts pressure on the euro and should limit any significant gains in that pair.
In addition, the market is increasingly accepting that the Bank of Japan (BoJ) will continue to raise interest rates in 2025, the rapidly escalating U.S.-China trade war and global recession concerns may continue to support the yen. This makes waiting for a strong follow-up buy more cautiously before a new bullish bet around the EUR/JPY cross-coupon pair. Even from a technical point of view, the recent failure to find support above the 200-day simple moving average (SMA) has also constituted a certain warning to the bulls.
