USD/JPY slump as Fed rate cut expectations rises and tariff chaos intensifies

The US dollar/yen fell during the European session on Thursday, falling back to the 143.00 range, after a two-day moderate rebound. The change xmtraders.comes amid a weak dollar, as speculation about the Fed's interest rate cut resurfaces and trade news sparked market uncertainty. As risk sentiment improves slightly, U.S. stocks rose by positive durable goods data and Trump’s trade optimism, the yen continued to outperform most G10 currencies, backed by a decline in U.S. yields and continued safe-haven demand.

The market entered Thursday's deal with a cautiously optimistic tone, motivated by U.S. President Donald Trump's xmtraders.comments on a deal with China and softening of tariff stance. Although U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Besent then clarified that no formal proposal has been made to China, he acknowledged that current tariff levels may not be sustainable. In terms of data, U.S. durable goods orders surged 10.4% in March, but core data, excluding transportation, remained flat at 0.0%, showing the xmtraders.complexity of the economic outlook.

At the same time, the number of initial unemployment claims rose slightly to 222K, suggesting a slight slowdown in the U.S. labor market. Fed governor Beth Hamak stressed his patience in monetary policy, saying the Fed could take action in June if the data proved reasonable. These dovish remarks, xmtraders.combined with ongoing political and fiscal resistance, have brought the US dollar index (DXY) back below 99.50, limiting the rebound of the US dollar/yen.

In Japan, the market is concerned about the next week of Economic Secretary Ryozo Akazawa's visit to Washington for tariff negotiations. Previous discussions with the United States are not good for Japan, especially in terms of automobile and steel tariffs. Despite this, the Bank of Japan is one of the few G10 central banks that maintain the hawkish outlook.Provides long-term support for the yen.

Technical Outlook

From a technical point of view, the US dollar/JPY sends a bearish signal. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is located in the neutral area near 39, while the Moving Average Convergence/Diverage (MACD) continues to send a sell signal. Additional neutral readings for Williams %R and Bull Bear Power Indicators indicate limited confidence in intraday direction.

The overall trend is bearish, as the 20-day, 100-day and 200-day simple moving averages are all sloping downward. The short-term exponential moving average (10-day moving average at 143.05 and the 30-day moving average at 145.70) further restricts the attempt to rise.

Immediate resistance is at 143.05, further resistance is at 144.53 and 145.10. On the downside, the support level is around 142.45 and 142.26. If you break through these support levels, the path to 141.00 may be opened.

Unless the U.S. dollar regains demand or tariff negotiations provide a lasting catalyst, the minimum resistance path for the U.S. dollar/yen may still tend to downside.
