Gold prices soar to over $3,300 as trade tensions and yields slump reignite safe-haven demand

Gold prices stopped their two-day decline on Thursday, up $50, or more than 1.50%, as concerns about the U.S.-China trade war heated up again. Although U.S. President Trump softened his insistence on Beijing's 145% tariffs, gold/dollar traded at $3,338 after jumping from a daily low of $3,287.
The market sentiment remains optimistic, with Wall Street recording an increase. While traders are relieved that Trump is willing to reach a deal with Beijing, China has taken a tough stance to demand the removal of all "unilateral" U.S. tariffs and clarified that they have not negotiated with the U.S. government.
The prices of precious metals rose due to sharp declines in U.S. Treasury yields. The US dollar index (DXY) also felt pressure in trading a basket of six currencies, hitting a four-day high.
In terms of U.S. economic data, the number of initial unemployment benefits is in line with expectations. Durable goods orders rose sharply in March, mainly driven by aircraft orders.
At the same time, a wave of Federal Reserve officials attracted market attention. Cleveland Fed Chairman Beth Hamack said the Fed could take action in June if data supports it, but stressed that uncertainty puts pressure on business plans.
Federal Director Christopher Waller expressed a similar view, pointing out that although June’s actions are still under consideration, the rate cut could be driven by weak labor markets. Waller said, "The rate cut may be due to rising unemployment."
Regarding the possibility of the Fed lowering interest rates at an upcoming meeting, traders believe that the probability of keeping interest rates unchanged is 94%, according to PrimeMarketTerminal'sdata. However, traders expect Fed fund rates to end at 3.45%, equivalent to a 86 basis point cut.
XAU/USD Technology Outlook: Gold price uptrend recovers, buyers return to $3,300
Gold price uptrend recovers, but buyers must break through the $3,386 high on April 22 to prevent sellers from pulling down prices. The next key resistance level will be $3,400, followed by $3,450 and $3,500.
On the other hand, if gold/dollar falls below $3,300, this could open the door to test $3,200, followed by the $3,167 high on April 3. Breakthroughs of the latter will expose the 50-day simple moving average (SMA) at $3,041.
